Just saw an amazing article about using “sync” as a dj. (This has nothing do do with weddings, I’m just on one right now after wayyyyy to much coffee in the morning) For those of you who don’t know Sync is a part of a Dj program that makes sure the songs match tempos. Sync, which could also go by other names makes mid to low lv Dj’s look way better then they should, but it also lets high lv Dj’s worry about other aspects of the mix. Im on the fence about this subject, I really don’t have strong feelings one way or another, but I will say this… I certainly do not use such hogwash, but its because I had the privilege of growing as a DJ using the famous Technics 1200mk2 and i’m like a chemist with the tempos…. cause the Technics 1200 secretly sucked and lemme tell ya why!!!
Now if an avid old skool turntabilist like myself heard some one bad mouth Technics like that… its certainly grounds for a fight on sight. Alas… its unfortunately the facts. As a hip hop Dj from the 90’s and 00’s I got to watch the Dj tech evolve from very basic direct drive turntables with analog tempo faders to the digital tempo faders we deploy now. We prop Technic up as this “God” amongst products most likely because they sponsored the DMC”s but the reality is outside of the Mk5 the 1200 line was rough. From the sound cables being installed inside of the case to a couple other notorious failure points, I speak from experience when I say you needed a couple sets of these things cause one pair was always in the shop.
The biggest downfall of the older 1200 models was by far the analog 8+fader. For those of us who know the 1200mk2 model especially was notorious for having a +2 degree tempo dead zone around 0 on almost every tempo fader after use… not a single one was safe. this meant inside of that tempo dead zone there could be quite the fluctuation of BPM you needed to maintain that tempo by moving the record manually which is and unbelievably hard task to accomplish. Every single song I mixed for almost 12 years I had to be on the tempo manually both left and right decks. I’m talking 5 hours a night, 3 nights a week for 12 years I had to deal with this… and as a result i’m absolutely cold blooded with mixing now…. and its all because the Technic 1200 line of turntables secretly sucked… so to Technic, I say thank you for making me the Dj I am today!!!!
Thats about all I got to say about that (read in your best Forrest Gump voice)
Health & Happiness all!!!
